Interesting Stained Glass Facts & Stories |
Glass is more gentle, graceful and noble, and its use is more delightful, polite and sightly, than any other material at this day known to the world. Antonio Neri, 1612
Glass is shiny, hard and fragile, shattering in an instant or surviving for thousands of years.
Stained Glass is the story of one of mans most subtle skills, his ability to create a feast of light and color, a perfect fusion of art and nature. It is an art form which spans more than one thousand years and which is as relevant to modern art and architecture as it was to that of the middle ages.
Stained Glass is the only art form that relies on natural daylight for its effect.
In 1330, a wealthy donor named Richard Tunnoc, living in York, England, donated money for a window in the Cathedral. Today, his window is still there. This is not just another example of medieval quaintness, or a detailed view of antique lifestyles. It is a call from the past and it tells us that our friend Richard Tunnoc was here 671 years ago. It is a message across the ages. Perhaps that is the value of Stained Glass. It is not museum bound. Its an art thats part of something greater that cannot exist without architecture and light. But Stained Glass has more to offer than sheer visual splendor. It is history held up to the light.
